Welcome to Geography

I hope you are all set to have a successful and enjoyable school year.  I am excited to be your teacher and look forward to teaching you all about Geography.  Please note that each class period has it's own page for schedule, homework and anything else we might come across.  Feel free to look around and enjoy the page.

What is geography?
Geography is the science of place and space. Geographers ask where things are located on the surface of the earth, why they are located where they are, how places differ from one another, and how people interact with the environment. Geography teaches us about the world and the world’s diverse inhabitants and places as well as about local regions and global issues. It enables us to understand our home by opening windows on the rest of the world.

Why study geography?
To be successful contributors to a democratic society, all individuals need to have an understanding of geography, which means that they need to have an understanding of the spatial context of people, places and environments on Earth.  The geographically literate person knows where important things are, why they are located in those places and the significance of the locational patterns of the world. Furthermore, she comprehends the nature and significance of multiple connections between people and places around the world.

How will we study geography?
The three goals of this course are to develop your knowledge of the world in which you live, to develop your thinking skills, and to develop your skills in the use of digital media for making meaning and demonstrating understanding.  You will learn three different ways in this course.  You will learn basic geographic knowledge, you will learn through self-directed exploration, and you will learn through collaborative small-group investigations.

Basic Geographic Knowledge
Every quarter each student will be expected to master basic geographic place knowledge.  This basic geographic knowledge will help students understand the location of countries and bodies of water around the world.  This basic knowledge will help students to better make meaning of our other learning and current events.  Students will practice, practice, and practice the basic knowledge and will have three tests on each set of knowledge – with each subsequent test score in a set replacing the previous score.
